Bacteria control, UV and ozone water treatment

Disinfection works best as part of a treatment train. Turbidity, storage conditions, contact time and upstream filtration can all affect how reliably a system controls microorganisms.

UV disinfection

UV exposes flowing water to germicidal ultraviolet light. For reliable performance the water should be sufficiently clear, the unit must be sized for the flow, and the lamp and sleeve require maintenance. UV does not provide a lasting disinfectant residual in downstream storage.

Ozone

Ozone is a strong oxidant that can support disinfection and can also assist with some oxidation processes. Effective use depends on ozone dose, mixing, contact time and safe off-gas management.

Pretreatment matters

Suspended material, colour and certain dissolved constituents can interfere with disinfection or create additional treatment demand. Filtration and conditioning may therefore be needed before the disinfection stage.

Verify drinking-water applications

Where water is intended for drinking, microbiological testing provides evidence about water quality. Equipment status alone should not be treated as proof that the water meets the required microbiological quality.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers to common questions we receive when planning this type of water project.

Does UV remove chemicals from water?

No. UV is a disinfection technology; it does not remove dissolved salts, hardness, iron or most chemical contaminants.

Why does water clarity matter before UV?

Suspended material and poor clarity can reduce effective UV exposure, so upstream filtration and suitable water quality are important.

Where can ozone be useful?

Ozone can support oxidation and disinfection in suitable systems, but dose, contact time, off-gas and the rest of the treatment train need to be engineered for the application.

Need a system designed around your actual water?

Send HydroGrid your location, water source, intended use, approximate daily demand and any existing laboratory report. We can then identify the information needed before a treatment proposal is prepared.
