Commercial and industrial reverse osmosis systems

RO can be a powerful process for reducing dissolved salts, but a reliable plant starts with feed-water analysis, pretreatment and realistic production requirements.

When RO is appropriate

Reverse osmosis is commonly considered when dissolved salts or specific ionic contaminants need substantial reduction, or where a process requires lower-conductivity water. It is not automatically the first treatment step for every borehole.

Pretreatment protects membranes

Iron, manganese, hardness, suspended solids, oxidants and biological fouling can damage performance or shorten membrane life. Pretreatment is therefore designed around the feed-water chemistry and the operating conditions of the plant.

Production, recovery and reject water

A plant is sized by the treated-water requirement, operating hours and expected recovery. RO also produces a concentrate stream, so water availability and reject-water management need to be considered when planning the system.

Instrumentation and maintenance

Pressure, flow, conductivity and other operating indicators help identify performance changes. Routine cartridge changes, membrane cleaning and feed-water management are part of keeping a commercial RO system reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers to common questions we receive when planning this type of water project.

How is commercial RO capacity selected?

Design starts with feed-water analysis, required product-water quality, litres per day, peak demand, operating hours, recovery assumptions and pretreatment requirements.

Why is pretreatment important before RO?

Pretreatment helps control fouling, scaling, chlorine exposure and suspended solids so the membrane system can operate more reliably.

Can HydroGrid troubleshoot an existing RO plant?

Yes. Existing systems can be assessed for feed-water conditions, pressures, flows, pretreatment, membrane performance and control issues before upgrades are proposed.

Need a system designed around your actual water?

Send HydroGrid your location, water source, intended use, approximate daily demand and any existing laboratory report. We can then identify the information needed before a treatment proposal is prepared.
